In 1944, the SS decited to convert the old 765m long railway tunnel near the town of Lengerich, near Osnabrück, into a bomb safe underground factory for airplane parts. The old tunnel was in use from 1871-1928 and has been a railway tunnel before that. The new tunnel was build in 1927, paralell to the old one with a small connection between both tunnels. During the war, the tunnel has been used as a bomb shelter by the people of the town too.
After the war it's been used as a mushroom farm and as a shooting range and then locked up and forgotten. The foundations of the old machines are still visible in the concrete, The bricks that were used for the conversion are gone and have been used for the reconstruction of the town after the war. The south portal is open now, the north portal has been bricked up during the war and been filled with soil, concret and rubbish up to the roof after the war.
Prisioners of the KZ Neuendamme were forced to do the conversion and to work on the machines during 1944-1945. Some of them died here too.
