VAL BENOIT UNIVERSITY

Visited with members Chaos and Markymark

We arrived mid afternoon after a long drive back across Germany, there was a couple of options to explore but ended up having a wander round the abandoned university, there was an obvious secca presence which to be perfectly honest were just loafing about not doing much so didn't seem to pose a threat. We cracked on and made our way in. The place has definitely seen better days, its been trashed over the years, in its hay day it would've been quite an impressive establishment. A couple of nice features still remain and wish we had a bit more time to venture further afield to explore more.

History

According to online sources the university is built on the ruins of the ancient Cistercian Abbey of Val Benoit. Being the owner, since 1924, of 8 hectares of land around the ruins the Liege Universtiy planned to build five new buildings: an institute of applied chemistry and metallurgy, an institute of mineral sciences, a laboratory of thermodynamics, an Institute of mechanics and an institute of civil engineering.

Work began in 1930. In November 1937, King Leopold III inaugurated the varying institutes. The institute of mechanics was inaugurated shortly before the second world war. In the late 1950's, the University of Liege embarked on the long adventure of migrating all its activities to a district within Liege. A little more than twenty years after the inauguration of its first buildings, the premature demise of the Val Benoit campus had been planned. The University of Liege finally downed it books and closed it's doors in 2006.
