Until its closure in 2005 Victoria Prison with its attached police station and magistracy in the heart of Central was by far the oldest in Hong Kong dating back to 1841. It was a one stop shop, two doors lead out of the magistracy, one directly to the prison and one to a busy street of unsuspecting shopper’s.

Declared a monument the Hong Kong government has been taking its time on deciding its future, a similar era police station across the harbour was butchered into a shopping mall with much of its originality lost forever, hopefully this won’t meet the same fate.

In the meantime totally out of character for Hong Kong’s nanny state government, the entire complex had its doors flung open during November to host ‘Detour 2010’ an art, photography & design exhibition. Close to 90% of the complex was unfettered access with hardly a soul around during the week, I made a couple of visits and really wished I could have had time for more..
