HISTORY

Volcrepe Ltd. was formed in 1931 and started its beginnings manufacturing rubber soles for footwear. In its later years it began producing specialist equipment to the Ministry Of Defence including Gas Masks for horses and the Home Guard as well as radio equipment.

In the 1950s the company whilst still producing footwear soling concentrated its efforts into cellular rubbers which it pioneered.

The company then produced rubbers for the aviation industry, oil, automobile, domestic and communications industries also.

The company closed down in 2002, to merge with another company, St Albans Rubber.

Volcrepe is split over in two sections with a road dividing it. The only connecting point is a small walkway high above the road with the company logo proudly painted on it; although now some what faded and decayed.

THE VISIT

I have wanted to visit here for a bit; so visited with Ojay and Dan (his first explore), after wandering around for a bit we found a suitable 10ft wall to drop Ojay down, a good effort on his behalf as he still can only use 1 leg and relies on crutches to get about!

The larger building was out of the question as even Ojay’s nimble on his crutches, it would still have been interesting with both legs. We were hoping the access bridge was not boarded up so we could just wander across.

The smaller building if fairly empty, but has some interesting features making it worth a visit.

Unfortunately the connection bridge is still boarded up, so gives me an excuse for another visit.

Now the last problem getting Ojay back up the 10ft wall, we tossed a coin to see whether we’d just pretend to go and get some images from else where and leave him there :)

We lost and managed to extract him safely you’ll all be glad to hear, the building we explored is the one on the right.

Not a bad place for a couple of hours :)
