Walkergate Hospital, Newcastle, April 2012

A small amount of history on the place:

March 2011
A HOSPITAL which has served Newcastle for 130 years is set to close.

The two remaining wards at Walkergate Hospital will shut for the final time.

Ten elderly ward 4 patients, many of whom have been cared for at the hospital for a number of years, are to be moved to nursing homes.

The ward provides longer-term and palliative care services for patients with chronic conditions.

It also provides respite care for patients for one or two-week periods.

Patients are often transferred to the ward from the Royal Victoria Infirmary or Freeman Hospital if they need longer term nursing care.

It is thought the closure will take place this summer.

The services offered by ward 3, a rehabilitation facility that helps patients regain their confidence in mobility and tasks such as washing, dressing and taking medication, will be moved to the Freeman.

Date unknown
This was built in 1888 originally as a
hospital for Infectious Diseases _
scarlet fever,diphtheria,typhoid,
tuberculosis and,later,polio.During
World War 1, injured soldiers who had
been sent home were housed in two
pavilions built on the East side of
Benfield Road.Originally temporary,
they were not demolished until about
7yrs ago.The hospital,now contracted
to 192 beds,has Eye,Ear,Nose and
Throat departments.

well, we were walking down a long corridor connecting wards when we see a torch shining at us. we think pikeys or kids, possibly security so start walking back the way we came.

That's until they start screaming at us to "GET ON THE FLOOR!"

6 coppers and a dog. The full works.

To be fair we weren't being very sly with the torches in a building pretty much made of glass. Bad choice going at night. Plus it looked as if it was being actively pikied with the safe being pulled out of the wall between mine and magpie243's visits in the same month.

As i say, lessons were certainly learned.

I'm just gonna add some of my pictures from a recent visit to this thread - hope you don't mind. :)

Got caught by security (wasn't a problem though) and didn't get to see all of the hospital, that's why I'm not gonna post a report.

Nice one :thumb

Shame about the x-ray bed.

No it's not that big and fairly bare, but there's still quite a bit locked up from what I remember?

Yeah well done on that, gave me the heads up. I'm surprised more locals haven't been in (:popcorn)

Love all the boxes of records from 2002 to 2010 which say 'Destroy' on them ,and should have been 'destroyed' but are they, nope NHS never bothers, patient confidentiality, I say bowlarks!

Building is an architectural pit, but some nice goodies in there. :thumb
