BRIEF HISTORY OF WAPPING FIRST SCHOOL
Wapping First School opened in 1877 and closed in 2000.
It's a Grade II Listed Building, which means renovation or development is nearly impossible. Along with the fact that it has been set on fire (arson) and vandalised in other ways, the building is basically just a shell of what it used to be.
This school was one of the first in Britain to have its own swimming pool.
In 2006, Bradford based property developers, Sphinx, bought the school and were planning on developing the site but unfortunately the fire damage had run up the costs too much. The site is now owned by the Life Church, which is also based on the same road. They plan to demolish it and turn it into an educational centre.
EXPLORING WAPPING FIRST SCHOOL
This site can be quite difficult to gain entry to and might take a little thinking outside of the box. Once inside, many of the rooms are in a very poor state due to the fire and weather damage making some of the school impossible to pass safely, and as this was only our second explore, we decided not to take the risk of entering some rooms.
The school is all based on one floor (from what we could see) except the swimming pool, which can be accessed down some stairs in between the two main buildings. The pool is located under what seems to be the main hall from what we could tell.
The pool area is littered with used drug needles, both at the far end of the pool and the small pump rooms next to the pool.
