After a 25 Mile bike ride, 2 McDonalds breakfasts, A blast on Sankey Valley BMX track & Breaks to watch the freight roll by I finally get to write this. I had seen this on the train in the morning and Myself & Aos were sat up on the bridge in the evening...
Built over the River Mersey in 1916 for a top price of £34,000, The Warrington Transporter Bridge, Bank Quay Transporter bridge & Crosfields Transporter Bridge as it is also known was used to carry 18 tonne railway trucks but was later converted to carry road vehicles.
The bridge is currently grade II listed and is also on the ‘Buildings At Risk’ register, Designed by William Henry Hunter the bridge spans 339ft over the Mersey and sits 76ft above the water. The Bridge was first used to connect the Joseph Crosfield & Sons chemical and soap workings.
‘State of this bridge, I wouldn’t mind making it to twenty’ – Aos.
On a slightly serious note this bridge is to be approached with extreme caution, Its current state is awful. The metal and woodwork has rotted and rusted away, With many of the hand rails and steps missing you have to watch your footing.
