I don’t really know much about the place but it closed about 2012 and then it seemed like somebody was starting work to renovate it but then nothing ever happened. This pub isn’t actually far from mine so I thought I would check it out. With incredibly easy access aswell. Apologies for poor picture quality again they was done on my iPhone until I fix my camera. It looks like there was a small kitchen fire and surprisingly with how long it’s been closed and how easy it was to get in there’s hardly any graffiti or vandalism there’s broken windows and stuff but overall it’s worth a look. I also found an underground tunnel that was a dead end I will post that soon even though it was a let down

Live and work right near here and always wondered if anyone’s ever managed to get in. Great photos!

Hi Ste, great pics, my wife and I were licensees of 'The Welly' from 1977 through to 1992, have great memories but never returned to it after we left so seeing this brings a lot back.
Thanks
Ian and Diane

My watering hole from 1976 to 1987 Great pub with great characters!

Thanks Keith, Many Great characters, sadly many no longer with us and much missed.
I have also been corrected by Diane that it was 94 when we left not 92 ........but then again the last 2 years were the start of a slippery slope once we were sold by Bass to Hydes.

Thanks Dave, yeah 17 years home for us too and our 4 boys that grew up there, really sad to see it now, could never have envisaged this demise of such a Great pub that it was but unfortunately there are many many others suffered the same or similar fate in modern Britain, Maggie's monopoly commission, all day opening and No smoking policy, the Greed of the Brewers and not to mention the end of Papermaking and other major industries in Radcliffe and the UK in general. ;)

It was! In fact I remember verbatim what it said in the Good Beer Guide ‘retains much original tiling’
With the fire going in winter, and Jack cooking sausages on a shovel over said fire is one of the many memories. (Although a lot of memories have been lost!)
There was even the resident Stephen Fry, otherwise known as Nicky. His command of the English language was a joy to listen to...!

Just a tip, try using a lamp or torch to light your pics instead of your phone flash, it makes a massive difference ;)

Edit, scrap that, I'm sure in 2 years you've already figured that out, didn't realise it was a vintage thread.
