So, after a night underground to celebrate New Year, a trip around Westwood to blow away the cobwebs.

Pretty well reported on here, but for any that don't know it this Wiltshire quarry had ongoing life post stone production, as a mushroom farm, as a wartime shadow factory for Royal Enfield motorcycles and as storage facility for many of Londons museum/art treasures at a time when that nasty Mr Hitler was throwing bombs at us.

A highly enjoyable few hours in the company of Tommo and D86.

Loading bay (one of a very surprising number) in the oldest workings

Nice pics. I must do a Tommo escorted visit round here rather than wandering aimlessly around - I didn't see half that stuff.

To be fair we always just do the clean mushroom part then Hanson then Enfield and on to wansdyke so it was nice to do the the original old workings and see the craftsmanship that's gone into the pillars

Pauln Sort something out with reef and we can do a good trip in there if u like :)

Nice pics........ I didn't see half that stuff.

Well that was my second tour of 2011 (I took some of our 'Northern neighbours' round earlier in the morning)

Those two trips (and indeed my previous trips) all took in different bits. Westwood really ranks as one of the most varied sites in Wiltshire - love it.

I wouldn't mind going back at some point, as there is a fair bit we didn't get to see due to time constraints :(
