Now then folks, not having seen a report from this place since 2014, I thought id have a stop by while I was in the area to see what I could see. Id picked probably one of the worst days to go as the weather was crap and it was getting late in the day and the light wasn't on my side so excuse the rather dull looking pictures! I did tell myself that id go back sometime soon but with not having a camera at the moment, that kinda puts it on the back burner, if someone else can get up there and take some better ones then go for it!!
Now, this is normally where Id put a bit of history up about the place, but after looking around the net, all I can find on the place is this:
Woollen mill, origin unclear but certainly in existence by 1834. Earliest substantial building is water-powered mill dated 1840, of four storeys and attic, seven bays long with internal end wheelhouse and timber floors. Post 1850 expansion involved achievement of integrated working with addition of steam-powered weaving sheds c1872 and later, and construction of further spinning capacity. Installation in 1909 of Pollit and Wigzell horizontal engine ('Agnes'), still in situ.
And now a bit of up to date info:
An historic textile firm has ceased trading with all but two of its remaining staff being made redundant.
Westwood Yarns, based at Washpit Mills in Holmfirth, appointed administrators just before Christmas after experiencing cashflow difficulties.
Two weeks later, almost 100 staff lost their jobs and 38 were retained as the administrators continued to trade the business in a limited capacity to fulfil a number of orders and looked for a buyer for the business and its assets.
A spokeswoman for the administrators said: “After operating the business in a limited capacity to fulfil a number of outstanding orders, and with a buyer unable to be found on a going concern basis, the company ceased trading.
“The joint administrators have retained two employees to assist with the sale of the company’s assets and other administrative matters, while the remaining 36 employees have been made redundant.
Fast forward to the present:
Ambitious plans have been revealed for an empty Holme Valley textile mill.
The former Westwood Yarns site at Washpit Mills, Holmfirth, is set to be revitalised with plans for housing, a hotel and a restaurant.
And it will also provide a new home for the Carding Shed, Oil Can Cafe and IK Classic Cars, which aims to move from its base at Dobroyd Mills, Hepworth, when its lease expires next year.
Prospect Estates, the new owner of Washpit Mills, said the mill would be transformed into a “vibrant” community and workplace. Plans submitted to Kirklees call for 50 houses, converting the historic mill building into 12 apartments and redeveloping the Millpond building into a hotel and restaurant. Part of the office and workshop will be leased to the Oil Can Café and IK Classic Cars.
