Another Willington report :)

After seeing them documented recently in a few other reports, and their handy location, it seemed silly not to pop by when on a recent roadtrip up north. It was the perfect spot to stretch our legs and breathe in that fresh country air. Visited with SirJonnyP and a non-explorer.

History:

The towers are all that remain of two coal-fired power stations which ceased to operate in the mid 1990s.
From a little research it seems the residential development option has been scrapped for the site. Instead a proposal to build a new gas fired power station has been put forward by RWE npower.
This would undoubtedly provide employment benefits to the local community, and deliver new generating capacity for the UK, however the original cooling towers would be demolished.

I couldn't find any up to date information on these developments however so I assume the towers will stand for a while longer.

The visit:

These things are bloody vast.

The first few were a bit same-y and empty inside which made for some interesting acoustics. I had a great time just kicking stones on the ground and hearing the sound amplify and reverberate 360 degrees around.
The others still have some internal structure which looked pretty sci-fi. Lots of industrial debris still around which was pleasingly rusty.

A nice relaxing explore and good way to spend an hour. All shot on black and white film which I left to develop a bit too long so overexposured....oops :D
