Willington Power Station in Derbyshire is now long gone. All that remain are the electrical relay distribution side of the power station (still live!) and 5 cooling towers. They're not the biggest cooling towers in the world but still pretty impressive.
A visit on a late Sunday afternoon after a weekend of several forays, this was the last stop. Being cooling tower virgins we were excited about this site, which met with expectations.
The first couple of cooling towers have had their heat exchanger matrices removed, so are just hollow and the the bases filed with hardcore. The other three still have the inside bits.
Pretty faded sign announcing our arrival at the intended site!
Not the first to visit by a long shot: previous visitor obviously broke his tripod
Some of the internal workings left in three of the five towers
Some very nice graffiti work
Couple of bits of rusty equipment left
Nice clouds and vapour trails, plus evidence of some of the weather damage stating to occur. We saw one sign warning of falling debris, but the towers still seem in really good nick for their age
Ladder to nowhere
Nice evening light whilst we waited for the sunset
Lovely sky to set off the towers
Reservoirs only a couple of inches deep now
More graffiti
Good shadows cast from the structure's legs
A perfectly relaxed and very serene explore, completely left to our own devices to enjoy the magnificence of these quiet giants left to slowly crumble away in peace. All we had to do was make sure we put the roll of wire back over the hole to stop the sheep getting in, and we left the site as tranquil as we had found it.
