Yep... you read that correctly, 2008!

So, I'd been sitting on these photos for nearly five years in the hope that I'd be able to explore the Underground Hospital again and get a better set of shots and also see more of it! However... time has flown by and by all accounts I think the site is still locked up pretty tight.

There's next to no history that I can find online about the underground hospital, which sits on the site of the current Portland Hospital (apart from photos on Facebook from someone mistaking the Underground Comms HQ for the hospital!).

From what I understand, the tunnels were built in to the hillside and used during the war as shelter from aerial bombardment. They were long forgotten about until around the mid-nineties when they were uncovered and opened up to the public for tours over a weekend (which I remember going to with my parents). After that, steel gates have been in place ever since.

There were originally three tunnel entrances to the underground hospital, although it's unclear whether they all linked up to create one large site, or used individually.

Markymark and I managed to enter the middle tunnel section in 2008 and found a bricked up doorway* stopping us from exploring the rest of the site. And as mentioned before, we never returned and assume the site is still locked up. Escape shafts from above were accessible until around 7-8 years ago until they were concrete capped. Kinger, Markymark and I also found a broken manhole cover on the hospital grounds which led us in to what we think was a service or escape tunnel but after a few meters the roof had collapsed and was impassable.

I apologise for the photo quality, they were taken on a point-and-shoot and I wasn't very l33t back then ;)

*as mentioned above, there's the bricked doorway stopping us from going any further...

Looking forward in to the tunnel. Tunnel Entrance is behind.
