West Park hospital was designed by William C. Clifford-Smith. In planning since 1906, largely completed by 1917 and officially opening in 1921. The hospital was the last great London mental hospital, and the last of the Epsom Cluster, a group of five mental institutions on the Horton Estate to the west of Epsom. The hospital follows the compact arrow design, with external villas.

Like most psychiatric hospitals of this size West Park was very much self sufficient and cared for around 2000 patients at its limit. Until the 1950's it was served by the Horton Estate railway. After closure which begun in the mid 1990's the ballroom suffered an arson attack on September 30, 2003 but much of the rest of the site remained in a decaying state.

What can i say about this place that hasn't already been said, written or re written? Nothing really. Like many others, i have many good memories of this place, my first visit was in 2008, after a full day inside we managed to get caught by the original MC hammer, who chased us through the corridors until we were cornered. Man he was pissed. More visits followed. I was there in the winter, and my last visit was to be in the baking hot summer with Kitty. Each time i returned the first thing i noticed was the familiar smell.

I've visited a fair few places like this but there was something about West Park.

    Good times.

It may or may not look like this now...

Here are some pictures from my visits...

It was around here that the hammer eventually cornered us the first time.. "Wha you doing in here!? Why did you run!?" ha

    Good times indeed.

    Thanks for looking.
