'Former second hand Furniture Store' : Les and Garys - I was a little late doing this one.. but better late than never.

Oh - and you've already guessed it !! : a dump load of Flats will be replacing this store that has stood for many years..

Les & Gary's | House Clearance | Southend On Sea was originally established by Les Harvey in Southchurch Road cc1976.

The former Les and Gary’s : Furniture Store - will be 'replaced' after proposals for five one-bedroom, and six two-bedroom and nine three-bedroom flats with a ground floor commercial space was passed by Southend Councils Development Team just yesterday. (15th May 2023) ..

The building is now in the motions of being pulled with much of the interior stripped out already.

@les and Gary’s in London Road, Westcliff reopened in a smaller unit at 631 London Road, having been taken over by Gary Bell’s daughter Madeleine and fiancée Chris Storozynski in cc2015.

The young couple opened the new shop on Saturday, August 6, under the new title 'Les and Gary’s - The New Generation'.

Mr Storozynski said QUOTE: “Gary sold the building and retired, which was when Madeleine and myself took over, but the building went back on the market with planning permission to be demolished so we had to make other arrangements".

The old building was described by former co-owner 'Sue Bell' as the largest second hand store in England.

The building went up for sale by auction with Auction House Essex at the Park Inn Palace Hotel, Southend, at 7pm on ccTuesday, July 19, with an asking price £1.1million.

Kevin Buck - a 'Conservative councillor' for the Prittlewell ward -is said to have welcomed the development with open arms and said "it'll be better than whats been here previously for the past 40 years !!

For what it's worth....

....."it's rumoured a dental practice may also accompany the proposed flats"...

Some local residents are not convinced and think that the new structures could appear 'too big' for that end corner.. and worry that if these new heights are allowed...then what other giant and tall structures will also be passed in the nearby area/s.

A valid point.

Parking may also be another problem in the already over populated area.

Les and Garys * New Generation has moved further down the same street and is trading as normal..

Glad to see this is back and documented thanks for taking time to re do it :thumb

As my previous comment said amazing to see where a high vis & hard hat gets you ! I would certainly get to this one quick if it’s not already gone !
