Report - Hainford Hall..Norfolk, April 2021

This hall ain't far from me at all but never got around to visiting it. I was at a loose end so had a quick look around, a nice relaxed visit. It's fairly stripped but has some nice features still. Hainford hall is a typical Georgian house, the house consisted of kitchens, cellars, reception room and eleven bedrooms upstairs. It was taken over by the military in the Second World War. Like many manor houses taken over by the military they were left in not to great a state. And many laid derelict or demolished. The hose was left derelict in 1948. A breakers yard moved into the grounds and I think parts were stored in the hall as well. The breakers yard was closed several years back and the house was put up for auction, a huge amount of work is needed here. I remember when I first got a car I use to go here for parts. You were pointed to the make of your car and you had to clamber over them and take your own parts off and then take it t the cash till.

Couldn't get in a few years back when I tried but saw it was open so a revisit is due

This brings back loads of memories for me. I grew up in two houses like this. One from birth til 12, then another 12 til 16. The big heavy doors, high ceilings, shutters on windows, boxes with bell tags in for main rooms, and servants to come calling. Fireplaces in ever room. We had sinks too though. I didn't apricate them at the time. It made me self conscious. But how id love to own one now.

The price paid at auction here, will cost the owner that again in refurb I expect. Nice explore. And the small, servants toilet with high windows, I knew them well lol

Yeah it went for a fair amount. Remember it being all over the local news. I ain't seen about the cluster before though.

Wow you were lucky to live in not one but two houses like that. I can imagine like most you don't appreciate them at the time. I think it will cost more than the selling price.

Yep never appreciated them. My father was a Chief Ex at Blue Circle so they provided the 1st house. Huge old place, 4 storeys, 16 bedrooms, 4 dining rooms, 4 sitting rooms etc. Huge entrance hall with stone pillars and double front doors, mosaic tiles on the entrance floors. When he died working abroad, my mother remarried the local GP, who owned the manor house of the village. Another big house. But not so big. But again it had cellars, attic flat, fireplaces, long driveway etc. Until he committed suicide. Then I finally got my wish of a small house in a rd, with a number like all my friends. Both houses were listed, but somehow, developers managed to buy them and tear them down. One now has 8 homes on. And the other a whole new rd and close with 20 homes on. Sad I didn't appreciate them then!!
