Report - Hellesdon Hospital - Function rooms - Apr 21

The hospital has its origins in the Norwich Pauper Asylum which was established near the St. Augustine's gate area of Norwich in 1828. These facilities became inadequate and a new purpose-built hospital was designed by Richard Phipson using a corridor plan layout.
It was opened as the Norwich Borough Asylum in 1880. An extension for male patients was completed in around 1900 and a similar one for female patients was completed in around 1920.

The hospital became the Norwich City Mental Hospital in the 1920s and it joined the National Health Service as Hellesdon Hospital in 1948. Modern facilities have been added at the rear of the hospital but the main accommodation block remains in use.

Was a bit of a weird one, we had no idea what was what but soon became apparent there was 2 empty wards & this function room & semi underground social club.
we couldn't get in either of the wards (believe me we tried) but think we were really lucky to find this bit accessible.
Didnt get a huge amount of pics but here they are.

& in case you are questioning our attempts at the wards, doing this in front of live wards was quite enough for me lol

Nice one - was hoping there’d be loads of old tat under the stage a la Goodmayes, but a club is probably even more interesting!

I can’t quite make it out from your pics - is there a projection booth behind the balcony?

U know I aint sure. The corridor below it was live so I was quite concerned about being seen there so didnt get too close.

Nice one. Had a peer through the windows at the height of the asylum exploring era and always expected the place to close one day. Still waiting 15 years on!

Thanks dude, I cant find anything from here anywhere, Id b interested to see any pics from the wards though looking through windows they looked pretty stripped

Oh just seen the odd picture of the hall on insta & FB while back. It's good to see more though!

I have seen this last night on the local groups. Guess you are lucky you had skeleton keys. I always did wonder if that mortuary might have a little something in it. Tried the door several years ago.
