Report - Kettleness Railway Tunnel February 2023

Kettleness Tunnel and Sandsend Tunnel are relics of one of the least profitable branch lines in British railway history - the Whitby to Loftus line. The route closed in 1958 having been beset by structural issues from the outset.
The original route was set to follow the coastline much lower down the cliff, work did begin but was later abandoned before the current route built

I explore a small cave / tunnel attached to this midway through which was created and used during construction. The tunnel itself appears to be in good condition, much better than her neighbour Sandsend Tunnel.

Nicely shot you've shown the bend in the tunnel very well. This is one of my favourites along with Sandsend tunnel. Sandsend is in a poor condition now your right it hasnt faired too well i suppose due to its much longer length plus air shafts etc. I first went through Sandsend in the 1980s and it was bad then probably not worth the effort now.

I followed up with Sandsend on the same afternoon. I'd read about flooding and gases. There was no issues with flooding at all and i was able to do the full length. The adits were a bit too messy to attempt though
