Sandwich Military Prison - October 2022
Just seen another report on this place so figured out I should post my own. Visited last October and didn't stay long as it was full of asbestos and what appeared to be literal shit.
Got a little lost on the way as English Heritage had very kindly left the roman fort open and ended up walking on their site parallel to the path I should have taken.
History
During the first world war a secret port was built on the banks of the River Stour, used to ferry troops across the channel, the nearby prison was used for any British soldiers stationed at the port that had broken the rules.
Graffiti scratched into the walls suggests that it wasn't just the British in the prison, there's a drawing of a house captioned ‘Amtshaus’ a German word for a state administration facility.
The prison is relatively small with only 10 cells.
