Hi, this is my explore to Denbigh asylum. First il give a brief history of the building and it will be brief as I am sure many of you already know about this building...if you don't use this as a starting point and go and do some research. there is some very interesting info about Denbigh asylum out there.
"The North Wales Hospital (locally known as Denbigh Mental or Denbigh Asylum)[1] is a Grade II listed building. Designed by architect Thomas Fulljames, building started in 1844 and completed in 1848. Once a hospital for up to 200 people with psychiatric illnesses, by the early 1900's it housed around 1,500 patients and staff. It is located in Denbigh, Denbighshire, Wales." (not my words, this is from another website).
It took me 3 trips to finally walk around the whole of the grounds of Denbigh asylum. The first trip I went with my partner and only managed to see the church/chapel and the morgue at the back of the building. it was my first explore in an asylum so I was nervous, excited and a little freaked out, we heard a car driving around and needless to say I freaked and we went home.
The 2nd time I was with my super cool 70 year old dad, who loves exploring and my sister. With my dad I felt untouchable and safe, so we pretty much covered the whole of the main building. We also bumped into the famous Alwyn and his dog and despite the bad press about I'm he turned out to be a lovely man. We asked him politely if he mined us being there and for a bit of history about the place as he's been touring the grounds for many years. He said he didn't mind us being there as he knew that we was respectful of what the building was once used for and knew we only wanted to get some pictures before the harsh Welsh weather totally destroys the place. We bumped into him numerous times on our visit and if I'm honest I think he felt safer with us being there as there was plenty of vandals hanging about. during our trip around the main house we felt a mixture of emotions some sad and in some parts we felt really relaxed, in other parts we felt like all we wanted to do was cry. we lost track of time and realised that we was running out of day light so decided to leave and come back the next day to go around the nurses quarters.
I will post the nurses quarters on another thread as I'm sure you are all getting a bit bored of reading this now.
