In 1988 I was working on a project that had me in Las Vegas about one week every two months, On a couple of occasions I was stuck there for the weekend. I had heard about this place and the idea of heading to a cool mountain top rather than being stuck in the scorching dessert valley appealed.

This facility is Las Vegas Air Force Station. At the top of the hill is the Radar installation that I had been informed was abandoned. I subsequently discovered that it was still active in parts but had been handed over to the FAA for civilian use.

I drove up there in my hire car that was , the following week, to earn me a lifetime ban from Alamo Car Hire, but that is another story.

The entire place was eerily silent and had a general air of abandonment about it. Obviously a lot of structures had been demolished.

The odd worrying sign and seriously locked buildings and fences prevented entry and closer examination of the remaining structures.

But there were still some nice high vantage points

Some cool looking kit

and serious reminders that this was still the cold war period!

I doubt that this is accessible any more as the barracks buildings further down the hill are now used as a youth correctional facility, so could end up being a one way trip:)

Enjoy!
