So I’ve had yet another road trip in Germany and managed to pay a long over due visit to this giant!

Bagger 258, also know as the blue wonder.

Bit of history. (Taken from Wikipedia)

Bagger 258 is a bucket wheel excavator built by the heavy machinery company Lauchhammer. First put to use in East Germany in 1964, Bagger 258 was one of a series of such machines whose task was to assist in intensive mining operations. With a length of 171.5m and reaching a height of 50m, the 3850-tonne Bagger 258 rather resembles a factory although this factory was mounted onto giant tank like tracks and able to move at a speed of six metres per minute. Bagger 258 was abandoned in 2002, for no better reason than that it had simply run out of things to dig. By this point the giant was showing its age, and the cost of dismantling it wasn’t justified.

I was only brave enough to climb up to the crane as after 16 years of the harsh German weather is paying its toll on the metal and rust is rviolently eating away at the metal. Have to say this is at the top of my list for most interesting explores.

Even though I’ve tried to show the scale of this giant, iant by standing next to the bucket in the picture, it really doesn’t do justice

Hope you enjoy

Can't beat a bagger, these things are beastly, there's only 1 left in the UK now ;)

It's all about 288 though, but it's pretty much in use 24/7 that thing...
