I got the chance to visit a one of these rare beasts last month, i tried my best to remember all of the interesting stuff and the pics were only taken with my phone but i hope a few find them interesting.

The Gas Holder:

This is an original Clayton Waterless Gasholder (sometimes reffered to as a Wiggins Type) and was constructed on the battersea in 1926 with a view to providing additional high pressure supplies to the local boroughs. The benefit of the waterless design is that there is minmal groundworks required and no bulk excavation needed as it is entirely 'above ground'.

Sadly the downside of this design is the piston within the holder used to pressurise the gas, its a simple design but requires a lot of maintenance.

This particular holder and its neighbouring water sealed holders are due to be dismantled in the new year.

Whilst visiting the site i braved the 87m hoist ride to the top and was breath taken by the views of london, i'm a wannabe photographer but the views of london from the roof could be amazing for someone with a decent camera and half an idea....well worth a look some time people but make it soon coz she's coming down from March 2012!
