After a wander around Reigate Fort, took a trip up to Oxted to look at the BBC monitoring station in Tatsfield.
Heard a few storys about this place but wasn’t that interested until I heard that it was the first place in the UK to pick up the Russian Sputnik satellite. Wasn’t quite sure what was left up there but thought I’d take a look anyway.
Bit of history,
WW2 BBC technical monitoring was carried on at Tatsfield in Surrey. Much of this work was concerned with accurate checking of transmitter wavelengths and identifying the location and nature of enemy jamming transmitters. Another important contribution was the reception of despatches from BBC mobile short wave transmitters used by War Correspondents, and of programmes from the USA for onward relaying from BBC transmitters.
All surface buildings are in a very sorry state and suffering from fire damage. The only interesting structure is this part sunk bunker. Had a real ROC post feel to it.
Note the hatch similar to ROC post but made of wood.
