Visited with Stumpy and Zippy.
First... a taster...
This pit closed in 1993, and has become very derelict. The main components are being restored and there is a great museum on site. We were, lets say, off the beaten track a bit.
In the coal preparation plant (maybe?)...
Add that lot together and multiply it by 200. That's how big this one building is.
The lift brings the loaded wagons up top this level...
They then use gravity and roller-coaster type brakes to move into a machine that simply rotates the whole wagon, emptying it out...
A control room connected with the wagons...
The lift control room, directly overlooking the shaft...
Some trackway disappearing into something since demolished...
Another little control room...
A loaded wagon, waiting to be emptied...
Ultimately the coal is despatched from the colliery. This is the loading bay control room...
Zippy inside the cooling tower. This had plastic slats inside...
Underneath the buildings was the marshalling yard for the mine trains and equipement. Engines, personnel carriages, generators, drills, transformers and loads more besides...
Inside a miners carriage..
Busted for the second time...
Actually, the guys were sound. They are real enthusiasts.
Hope you enjoy this, we certainly did. More photos later I'm sure.
