Mining has always been a part of industrial life in Derbyshire's Peak District, the landscape has been shaped by it - indeed, it sometimes feels as though there isn't a part of the Peak District that hasn't been dug up at some point.
The Buxton area seems to have been particularly well quarried, with Sterndale Moor being dominated by the Quarrying triumvirate of Brierlow, Hindlow and Dowlow Limestone Quarries.
Brierlow and Hindlow are operated by Lhoist UK Ltd, whilst Dowlow, with its history dating back to 1899, is Lafarge Aggregates' second most important site in the UK, producing over 1.5 million tonnes of limestone a year.
All three sites are very much live, though the last 12 months have seen the production dip, (according to the Bacon Butty man in the layby at Alsop Moor
). The sheer scale of the places makes it unlikely you will encounter anyone, that said there was a period at Dowlow where it got a little 'busy' 
.
