The last stop of the second day on our recent trip to Ireland. We were running out of light by the time we got here, but we decided that it looked good enough for a quick run around. Later on, as dark came, Jamie_P informed me that the lights worked, and so we were able to spend another hour or so inside. It was much easier to get to and inside that I thought it would be, although we did have a run in with some headlights down the drive as we were leaving, and a long walk in the pouring rain after that, but we stayed in high spirits as this was a pretty nice success.

History

Cahercon House was originally used as a private residence by the Scott family, and later the Kelly and Vandeleur families. As with most country houses (or any other building, really!) in Ireland, it was later used as a religious educational institution. In the 1950's, the house became St. Senan's College, a philosophical institute and seminary. It later became the Sisters of Saint Columban's Convent, which ran a high school at Cahercon. In 1962, the house was used as a boarding school for girls by the Salesian Sisters. Five boys were admitted into the school in 1970, which meant the school had become co-educational. Cahercon House was later vacated in 2002, when the school was amalgamated into a newer community college in the area.
