hmmm sounds good actually!!!!! Do the practical tips relate well to digital photography also? I assume they would?

It was published in 1987, so all info is related to film..

It still covers a lot of areas which are relevant to digital (including protecting your kit from mud and water!)

Hmm..

Just found what appears to be an updated version by the same author:

"Images Below: Manual of Underground and Flash photography."

Author: Chris Howes

# Hardcover: 280 pages
# Publisher: Wild Places Publishing (16 Jul 1997)
# Language English
# ISBN-10: 0952670119
# ISBN-13: 978-0952670117

I think I'll try to get myself a copy.. :)

It is a very good read but it does'nt really lend itself to todays modern digital photography and lighting techniques. Another good read by the same chap is "To Photograph Darkness," there is a superb read about Nadar and his exploits in trying to light & capture the Paris Cata's back in 1862.

I would imagine the concepts surrounding lighting would be the same. We use slave flashes held or placed in strategic positions to get the job done as its too hard more often than not to do exposure shots. To see the sorts of resluts I am talking about, look for Alan Prykes photos at this site:

I just got "Images Below" - it is very film-based, but most of the advice is about flash setup and positioning, which is still just as useful now. I did have to think a bit to remember what a "flashbulb" was, though :)
