Chellaston Quarry Locomotive sheds were the base of the Royal Engineers (railway division) and the Melbourne Military Railway and are situated to the south of Worthington Junction (formally Chellaston East Junction) in south Derbyshire. In 1939 this became the headquarters of the Royal Engineers Railway Military Training School, it comprised of the Engine Shed, Workshops, Army Huts, Offices and many Railway Sidings. There were 8 or more railway engines based here and in steam daily, being used namely to train Royal Engineer sappers in railway operations, until 1st January 1945 when the site was handed back to the L.M.S after the war with Germany ended. The sheds were then subsequently used as a wagon repair depot and then storage dump for disused steam locomotives after the cessation of steam power during the 1960's. The quarry signal box closed on in 1966 and the sidings lifted in 1967. Final lifting of all the track was performed by Trackwork of Doncaster Ltd during 1988. It was the intention at one stage to convert the shed into a railway museum/hostel for interested parties however there were problems regarding access and nothing materialised.
The main building in 1989 looking slightly worse for wear already
This is unlikely to win any derp of the year competition but may be of interest to any Derbyshire lurkers or people interested in military railway history. This was a pleasant evening wander and I always enjoy finding a strange shape on Google Earth and then heading out to it.
The first thing I came across were the various remains of the Royal Engineers training school - including this now roofless large building
Two large 'Typhoon' fans/heaters in the back
There were several of these hut type of buildings, including one which was very large (probably former offices) and looks to be being used as storage for a nearby residential site.
The locomotive shed was proper buried away in a heavily wooded area and I approached it from the wrong way and had to burrow through the undergrowth...
Not a lot to see, but a pleasant evening walk nevertheless
