To explore such a place with this kind of history, that hasn't been completely smashed and tagged, is a real honour and a pleasure. Sure, its not in perfect condition, the rain is getting in, the floors are pushing up and the paintwork and paper is peeling, but you can get a real sense of how great this place once was. The main entrance hallway is fabulous, with a grand staircase sweeping up to wood balconies supported by really nice wood columns - all in pretty good order still. The room with the red curtains and big mirror has certain poignancy about it and the library is just awesome.
There's been a manor house on this site for hundreds of years and earlier buildings have been razed and rebuilt, each one serving as home to a number of generations of local gentry (no royalty though from what I can find) The Tull farming family owned the place for a number of years before it was sold off and subsequently used by The GWR, USAF and more recently as a boarding school. After school staff were convicted of sexual abuse of the students in the 1980's it was turned into flats, but has stood empty since 2007. As always, there a re 'plans' to redevelop, however little progress appears to have been made.
Once we were in, Bitca and I immediately heard voices and footsteps moving around upstairs, but after a few minutes we figured there was nobody looking for us and so we went about our business, eventually bumping into a nice couple of lads as they came down the main staircase (you know who you are!!) We spend a good thee hours in here and poking around the outer buildings which are all worth a visit. All in all a great explore - we might even go back sometime.
