The History

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A large mill complex set amidst rural scenery. A water powered mill was first built here by the Moorhouses of New Mill in the 1830’s/40’s. Little remains of this, although the large dam still exists behind the site. Was rebuilt (probably c1870) – three storey main building with small, square tower. Number of late 19C/early 20C additions and separate buildings (including weaving shed). Square stone chimney built into part of the mill. Above this older part is a collection of large, mostly 20C industrial buildings – some designed like weaving sheds.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The older mill buildings are now subdivided into units and seem to be mostly used by small businesses. Yarn spinning in the large modern buildings above, although apparently the firm here were recently in trouble.

The Visit

Visited with @Sheard - although most of the mills machinery had been removed by the time of our visit this was still a really enjoyable explore. Nice to see a mill where the windows aren’t smashed to pieces, and you can’t beat a good switch panel. ;-) Couple of months late with this report but think it still warrants a look...

This is a nice mill. Again, some of the big open spaces are brilliant. I really liked the rusty floors. And there are still some interesting feature.

Nice snaps.

Cheers. Yeah, nice atmosphere to this one, especially with the water running close by and the light through the windows. And a fake security guy too, on the chair, just to keep you on edge! ;-)

Cant believe I haven't seen this till now, that looks a cracking mooch that! Great report as usual fella :)

Thanks BT - it’s a lovely mill, I think the top floor used to be even lovelier before it was cleared. There was some reports on here saying it’s become a bit more closely watched, so take heed...
