Donaldsons School in Edinburgh

Some history -

Donaldson's School for the Deaf is one of the most famous and distinctive buildings in Edinburgh and was designed by Edinburgh's foremost architect William Playfair in the 1840s. The design was massively influenced by Elizabethan manor houses, in particular Burleigh House in Northamptonshire. The School decided to relocate in 2003 and CALA Homes were the successful bidders for the site at which point they asked for our involvement.

Donaldson's was founded in Edinburgh in 1851 as Donaldson's Hospital by Sir James Donaldson (1751–1830). The original benefaction allowed for special bursaries for poor children. Not all were deaf, although applications on behalf of deaf children were encouraged. From 1938, pupils were exclusively deaf. This benefaction was similar in style to the benefaction of George Watson, who founded and supported other schools in Edinburgh.

Queen Victoria is said to have been jealous of the landmark William Henry Playfair building in Edinburgh, apparently stating that it outclassed some of her palaces.

During a German air raid in 1916, much glass was destroyed by a zeppelin. (some of this damage can still be seen in the warped window frames of the main hall)

Quite a stunning building :D

We took it easy as theres a full ADT alarm system that I can vouch for it being switched on and to make it worse theres a guard INthe building itself.

After a few trips we figured (after peeping in the window) that one particular guard had rather lengthy naps each night

We picked our night carefully and went for the kill :D

enough babbling heres some pics :D:D:D:D:D

enjoy

All in all an ace explore .... quite empty but theres more to see when we can be bothered braving the PIRS. Theres hundreds of the beggars :(

A comedy exit followed too ..... Cuban half out the window when the guard decided to wake up and have a stroll....... Cuban stayed perfectly still on the window and the guy walked right past .... obviously still half asleep.
