Report - East Tilbury Gun Battery..June 2018

Me and man gone wrong were in the area and we decided to go have a look at this fort. I had come across it online and soon found it on maps. I do like these gun batteries so we were quite pleased to see it was still in good condition. Built and finished in 1893 the fort consisted of six guns which could have the rounds lifted to them through lifts in the underground tunnels. Used to defend the Thames alongside Coalhouse fort. It consisted of four six pdr guns and two ten pdrs in the middle. The fort was decommissioned in 1913 and sold to a farmer who used it as an air raid shelter during world war two. The fort has casements and barrack rooms. And some other buildings opposite the gun areas.

Prob one of the nicer ones I have visited mate. It's condition was virtually untouched.

I missed so much of this place when I went. That's night time for ya. Id heard of the angry farmer, so when at night. Mistake to be fair. Always planned a re visit, so far I've not. Great set of photos there. There is the remains of a house around there too, not sure if it was connected to the battery.

I ain't been in many mines. But a chalk one here was used near the front as a bomb shelter and still had some bunks in it.
