Eaton House was originally built in the early 20th century as a mill and was used primarily by Tatton’s. William Tatton’s company started off as a silk dyeing business at Upperhulme. From 1924 the works wound rayon filament yarn and four years later ‘warping’ machines were introduced. Tatton’s later acquired a mill at Mayfield and in 1945 William Stannard & Co’s mill on Buxton Road was purchased.
The mill on Buxton Road eventually became Eaton House and was used by the NHS as the North Staffordshire Wellbeing Services. The wellbeing services recently moved to Newcastle-under-Lyme and the redundant former mill is now being demolished, to be replaced with a 70 bedroom care home.
Not a great deal to see here as demolition was underway and everything was stripped, but it was a much needed leg stretch before driving home. No remaining mill goodness inside unfortunately!
