Ferrari’s Bakery, Hirwaun, Wales – November 2016
So Mookster and myself were running out of time on our South Wales roadtrip weekend, had failed at a number of old chapels and began our long journey up the M4 back to Southern England.
After a successful but albeit cut short trip to Tower Colliery, we decided to stop off at this local Factory Bakery which was completely and utterly gutted in prep for demolition. We parked up in the village and noticed a parade coming the other way. It was Remembrance Sunday, so we cut the engine and sat in silence for two minutes before heading into the factory.
Anything of merit was gone, so we spent 10-15 minutes here before heading home
Ferrari’s Bakery was incredibly well known in South Wales and if you lived here, it was pretty much a certainty you would know their logo, cakes and pastries. The business once had bakeries on almost every high street, across South Wales, from Cardiff to Tonypandy.
Ferrari’s served up everything baking related you could think of from 'breakfast baps' to wedding cakes. The firm offered good value, quality produce and provided a quick, affordable lunch to workers all over South Wales, for many years.
But unfortunately, for the people of the area, the company went in to administration before Christmas of 2006.
The firm employed 600 people from South Wales and the factory in Hirwaun closed in 2008.
