After a failed attempt at Whittingham Asylum as secruity were driving around and loads of dog walkers, although got into the nurses block but pretty mashed up and not much of interest.
The Bunker down the road was next. Brillant place, well worth getting cold and wet feet in parts of it. Looks like some workers had been in as some construction lights were in the main room.
Went with Mini and Gemini. Cheers to Mini for driving

Re: Nuclear Bunker, Preston - 17/02/08 - REPORT

This was the Former RAF Group operations Centre at Preston and this is the FILTER BLOCK BUNKER. Just down the road (Longley/Langley Lane) you will find the former OPS BUNKER and the small COMS BUNKER (Derelict).

The FILTER Block was used for information disseminiation and operated in conjunction with the main Ops Bunker. After WW2 the Filter Bunker was used for a variety of purposes the most recent being as an AFHQ for the Region. It was then sold off and has only recently been sold again. It was in fact little used and has deteriorated badly.

The Main OPS Bunker just down the road was later converted into an ROC Group Control and was also projected as a new National HQ for the ROC, however this plan was never completed, and the conversion works inside were also never completed leaving a mixture of 1940's and 1980's interiors and fittings.

After the ROC was disbanded thought was given to converting the Main Bunker into a RGHQ, but again this never went ahead, but it does explain why the Main Bunker was fitted with the 1st generation RGHQ type ventilation equipment, which then went on to be fitted into the majority of the later RGHQ sites (Skendleby/Cultybraggan/Crowborough/Chilmark etc). At the time staff always wondered why an ROC site was given such a vast amount of sophisticated ventilation and power equipment. Sadly it was not intended for the ROC who were scheduled to be evicted, but for later changes that of course never took places as the Cold War brought an end to all these sites.

The Main Bunker has since been sold twice (lying empty and unmaintained for many years) and is currently in new ownership with some plan of conversion into a Computer Hosting Centre.

Just out of further interest the old ROC Contents of the Main Bunker were removed by English Heritage when it was first sold and much of this historic equipment now rots away, stored on the lower levels of Dover castle, so much for the 'Protectors of our Heritage' - Just a few of these items are now on display at RAF Holmpton.
