Evening guys, visited Grain Battery this weekend with my friend, and whilst on the way out we ran into a group of people packed and ready to spend the night on the battery... wasn’t any of you guys was it?
History:
Grain Tower was built in 1855 during an age of rapid costal fortification and improvement as a French invasion was expected. It was fortified with the addition of an upper level in 1912 to house two 4.7inch quick-firing guns. In 1914 a floating boom comprised of a chain was strung across the Medway to prevent enemy ships from entering it. Part of this chain is now wrapped around the bottom of the tower. In 1940 the Tower had a further refit to accommodate a twin 6pdr quick-firing gun. 29 men were posted here during that time. The tower was finally disarmed and decommission in 1946.
