HMS FORWARD
SUMMARY-
HMS Forward was a World War Two Royal Naval Headquarters, which maintained a broad maritime surveillance of everything that under, over and on The English Channel from Dungeness to Selsey Bill. There were ten coastal radar stations between Fairlight and Bognor Regis, that would of reported directly to HMS Forward. From there, all the information reported was filtered, plotted and also relayed by a teleprinter to similar plots at Dover and Portsmouth. As well as this, air and sea rescue was also coordinated from there.
HMS Forward was also greatly involved in many historic events during the Second World War, the most
commonly known one being D-Day (The Normandy Landings).

CONSTRUCTION-
In May 1941, The 172 Tunnelling Coy RE dug (approximately) half a mile of tunnels, which were lined and fitted by The 577 Field Company RE all in a surprising total of 13 weeks. It was then completed with filtration, air conditioning, a power plant and fluorescent lights (which it was one of the first to have). The inside of the tunnels would of included sleeping accommodation, teleprinters and a standby generator. Finally, it was also constructed with 4 pillboxes on the hillside, all which would of been only accessible from below and an observation post.
