in 1874 the great northern railway started work on the louth to bardney railway line, cutting through the rolling landscape of the lincolnshire wolds 2 tunnels were built to complete the full 21 mile line.benniworth tunnel (also known as high st tunnel)was completed in 1875 and is 557 yards in length, withcall tunnel was completed in 1876 and is 971 yards in length(this tunnel is located only a stones throw from a certain local r.a.f site with some nice radars that have been reported on here many times).passenger services finished in november 1951 and a final closure of the line came on the 17th of september 1956.both tunnels are in very good condition and these days withcall tunnel is an sss1 status hibernaculum housing up to 5 different species of bats..i apologise for the poor quality of photos,i ended up here by chance without my tripod or lights so had to make do with flash photography..on to the photos
