Having a background in mental healthcare work asylums are a particular area of interest for me but having never been to one I was in awe of this place, and right on my doorstep!

The hospital was declared open on the 21st of August, 1872 and has had several names over the years including the South Yorkshire Asylum, the West Riding Asylum, Wadsley and the Wadsley Mental Hospital. It was originally one of four hospitals that made up the West Riding General Asylums Committee. At its peak it was the designated mental health accommodation in South Yorkshire, with 2,000 beds.

The hospital finally closed its doors in 1996 and is now a private housing development called Wadsley Park Village. There were several Grade II listed buildings that avoided demolition including the Kingswood Ward, now converted in to 85 apartments and known as Kingswood Hall, the administration and clock tower building, now converted in to 38 apartments and known as Middlewood Lodge, the Porters Lodge which now forms part of a children's nursery and the church.

The church held its last service on 6th of November, 1996 to mark the closure of the hospital. In March 2012 plans were submitted by architectural design consultancy Coda Studios that may see the imposing Victorian church converted into a mixture of town houses and apartments. The scheme which needs approval from Sheffield City Council also contains proposals for a selection of partially underground eco-friendly bungalows beneath the building.

Funny how there"s a sudden interest in Middlewood, i wonder if Stanley Royds next ?

Pics are on the large side & I"ve got to say I hate your borders mate, and why you have them on every single picture you"ve taken is beyond me, they detract from any interesting medium you"ve photographed. (just my opinion :)

And as for Low Bradfield Filter House etc i think you"d maybe be better off on DP if you"re gonna process that way.....just saying

I stated in my introduction that some of the older stuff was heavily edited and this was something I had played with and moved away from.

As for the borders, this is something I prefered as opposed to a watermark. Whether you 'hate' them or not is down to personal preference.

I've noticed on my time spent reading this forum over the last couple of years that you seem to take every available opportunity to say something derogatory to someone, especially people new here. I don't know whether you think you're some kind of authority on this little hobby of ours, but it is just that, a hobby. Now as the old parable goes, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Just saying...

@Esoteric Eric - @ACID- REFLUX was only offering their opinion on what they thought of the boarders, as everyone has a right to do. You can't just expect everyone to post positive comments and you need to learn to listen to people's advice.

I appreciate constructive criticism and do not expect everyone to post positive comments.

My issue here was Acids general attitude on this forum.

I'm not here to argue on the internet, I'm just here to share my stuff with others that may be interested, if they're not then that's fine also.

But being a member for just a week, who are you starting fights with regular members. @ACID- REFLUX can come across as quite militant, but he his offering constructive criticism. I agree with him on the borders, they're shit

Welcome to the forum
Whilst the borders may not be to my taste; your photos themselves are quite good :thumb

AR has offered some constructive criticism. He has offered good advise in the past, which I have been grateful for.
Even if he has come across blunt to you, I don't think his intention was to be hostile.

As with the others Im not keen on the borders I do find they distract from the content of the photo itself. Acid Reflux is a sound dude and does offer some really good advice too.

Don't be to eager to knock the advice or the giver of advice, you never know when it may come in handy or they may have info you want :p A lot of people have built up a lot of respect from other forum members and it's not meant as a personal attack towards you its just feedback. ;)

Anyway despite the borders I like your photos :thumb

I may be mistaken (I often am) but is this not a first? I don't recall ever seeing photos of it before.

I've got torn to ribbons trying a few times!!

Cheers all.

Looks like a lot of love for the borders ha ha. Apologies for having a go as it seems according to form this is just Acids way and yes I do appreciate there are some long standing and experienced members here, my intentions are not to have arguments with people over the internet.

As stated, my interest in the building stems from my background of work in the mental health industry. Yes, having not visited an asylum High Royds may very well be on the list, but I won't bore anyone with pictures.

As Dweeb has said, I posted this report as I have only seen one previous by Lolz101. Feel free to message me for access Dweeb.
