Mitchell's of Lancaster also known as Yate's and Jackson malt house, visited with Hidden shadow, after seeing a report on the local news about two months ago i new that this was a must to do. with quite a bit of planning we made our way to the brewery, this has popped up on lead's and rumors as well i'm just surprised it hasn't been done before unless i'm mistaken.Either way i'm glad we managed to get it done as myself and oldskoll had a previous failed attempt. This is a beautiful little brewery set on four levels with oldest part set on the north side mainly held up with scaffolding, the rest of the brewery has some fantastic features old and new, the brewing room complete with brewing tanks one still made of wood, if you get the chance go and see this it is a beautiful brewery just watch the old wooden stair wells.
HISTORY.
This is a former yates and jackson brewery which mitchells occupied after Y&T ceased brewing. on the gate on brewery lane is Mitchell's of Lancaster Brewery Est 1865.However the precise date of the building as a malt house cannot be verified, there is a date stone on the gable end of the building dated 1669. however on the mackreth map of Lancaster it's dated 1778. 1872 the brewery became the possession of Yates and Jackson.In 1984 Yates and Jackson was taken over by Thwaites and the brewery sold to the Mitchells brewery.
The brewery was named after William Mitchell who signed his first lease for his first pub and brewhouse, the black horse inn of Lancaster, Mitchells is still a family business after 130 years. The brewery it self was used to make cask ales but a decline finally saw the brewery close in 1999, Thwaites still brew Lancaster Bomber formerly brewed here among many others.The building was due for demo but was over turned by a high court judge when save Britains heritage appealed against them the future of the buidling is still uncertain but is of grade II listing so will be around for a while yet
