After a disappointing but worthwhile day spent following up leads in the local area, we chanced upon these tiny workings in the Avon valley. A bit of consolation for a day of dead-ends.

Murhill quarry sits at the top of the tramway connecting it to the Kennet & Avon Canal. Opened in 1803, cut stone wouldve been transported via the K&A, floated towards Bath and Bristol. Before closing in the 1930s, some of the stone extracted from Murhill was used for the facade of Bristol Temple Meads railway station.

The workings also house filtration beds and part of the drainage system for a Sanatorium that once stood above. Good to see, although a struggle to spend very long here given its size.
