The phenomenon of "Numbers Stations" has captured the attention and intrigued the curious since they were first noticed shortly after the end of WW1. Typically they were used for espionage and super secret spying on both sides of the iron curtain.

Number stations transmit encrypted messages in forms of numbers, sound, letters, Morse code or digital signals. The recipient of the message can be almost anywhere in the world, and receive instructions without fear of being traced through a phone call or internet connection. All the recipient needs is a shortwave radio, the deciphering code and to be in the right place at the right time.

Usage of number stations has additionally been confirmed by former Cold War spies, and the cases of Erwin van Haarlem (1988), The Cuban Five (1998) and the Russian Anschlag couple (2011).

This is the former Station named UVB-76 or "The Buzzer" located 25 miles Northwest of Moscow, The Buzzer transmitted from this location from 1982 until it was moved 12 miles away from the Estonian border in 2010.

This is what The buzzer used to transmit

The Buzzer was located in a small military base, now empty apart from the houses, leaving behind not only the numbers station transmission tower (now repurposed), a very sealed bunker, a couple of "water treatment plants", thet we are pretty sure didnt treat much water and a main administration area with a cinema

I have been fascinated with these numbers stations ever since I first heard about them, I was very excited to see one and I expect I took a lot of photos that are neither interesting or relevant - But here are some of them :)

Well done! I was heavily into Numbers stations for a few years so this was a nice surprise when I spotted it. :thumb A bloody shame that bunker was locked up though.

Amazing how derelict it has become in such a short period of time. Always was such a fascinating numbers station.

Nice visit ! Numbers Stations still exist and a quick scan of the long-wave spectrum will reveal many more. Yes indeed, they have been transmitting for years.
