The introduction of refrigerated ships in 1882 meant New Zealand could ship frozen meat to the rest of the world and this became a massive industry. The meatworks in Patea has everything from killing to shipping in one place, cattle were butchered and frozen and then ships and trains could load from the cold store. Closed in 1982 and in a sorry state, the place is due to be flattened in the near future.
Old converted from steam pump
Old meat lift in the cold stores
This was cool, date of first use:
Very Chambers Wharf:
Strange water reservoir under some of the site for washing all the crap away...
Met two senior explorers in there, the old guy with the hat was the chief engineer there back in the day.
Freezing rooms
The whole place is slowly collapsing
Dodgy Stairs!
A wierd skin lifter thing
and the final place a living cow stood... ...start of the line
Probably one of the craziest control planels I've seen, check out the labels and the Carcasses per minute gauge!
