Annan was one of the crossing places of the Solway Firth and for hundreds of years had armies passing through to or from the English side. By the 1300's, a port had been established on the River Annan and this prospered, with shipbuilding being added. Ships up to 1,000 tons including tea clippers were built. During the 18th and 19 centuries, it was a major embarkation point for emigrants to America.
After that, it went into decline and silted up. Warehouses were demolished and the whole area became very run down. The council produced a grand regeneration plan and started by rebuilding a section of the quay, but this has stagnated due to problems of finance.
When visited, it seemed that the only maritime visitors were the odd ship, that came here to die! The last unaltered warehouse still exists, so this was explored too. It was stripped, but bits of the past still remained.
