Eastern Entrance Lighthouse - Portland Breakwater

A solo visit whilst out fishing in Portland Harbour.
I decided to take a break from catching fuck all, and have my packed lunch (:P) on one of the breakwater entrances.
Having visited the Checkered Fort a fair bit recently, I thought I’d check out the old metal lighthouse, at the other side of the Eastern Entrance.
It certainly didn't disappoint on that beautiful day in May...

Construction of the modern harbour began in 1849 when the Royal Navy created a breakwater made of blocks from local quarries on the Isle of Portland. This was completed in 1872. In 1905, the breakwater's Portland Breakwater Lighthouse was built, which continues to operate today.

This was nearly 2 years ago, and photos are only taken on my old iPhone 4S as I didn't have my full exploring set up.
I’ve since sold my little boat, and currently have no plans to get another, so a revisit is off the cards. For now.
But mainly, this “completes the set” for me, having visited every part of the Portland Breakwaters 3 walls. I guess it's about time to share it…

It’s a very photogenic location, not just for the lighthouse.
Years of exposure to the elements have created amazing amounts of corrosion of anything ferrous.
Those who have visited the opposite end of this entrance will notice that it is similar in feel to the Checkered Fort.
Being entirely untouched by vandals due to the remote location, it is a rare explore.

Shame the lighthouse doors were chained shut…

As there is a beautiful spiral staircase on the inside…

These merely lead to a bricked up archway that would have accessed the waters edge.

Unlike all of the other entrance "forts", I couldn't find any access to the innards.

Like I mentioned earlier, the corrosion on display is beautiful…
