Museum break-in by 'urban explorers'

An investigation has been launched after pranksters sneaked into a government site after dark.

The duo – who call themselves 'urban explorers' – scaled barbed-wire fences and slipped past a dozen security guards to get into the hovercraft museum on the former HMS Daedalus site in Lee-on-the-Solent.

They then took pictures to prove they had done it before disappearing into the night without a trace.

The photos have now been published on a website dedicated to the growing craze of 'urban exploring'.

Police have launched an investigation into how security was breached on the site, which used to be owned by the MoD.

The elusive pair, who go by the internet names Oxygen Thief and Stumpy, have made a hobby out of getting into secure places, usually military bases.

They targeted the museum as they thought it was still MoD land. However it has been sold to the South East England Development Agency which is funded by the government.

The pair post pictures of their adventures – including the outside and inside of the SRN4 cross-channel hovercraft – on an internet site dedicated to urban explorers.

A report of their Daedulus break in said: ''The security on this site is immense. This was probably one of the hardest explores we have done.'
