on a family holiday last week in alcudia and this bad boy had to be done, the two chimneys can be seen from any where in the bay and the place is massive. built like a fortress with underground sections, blast walls and tunnels. this place is starting to go through some sort of tourist renovation style project i believe with the intention of turning into some sort of museum and indusrty centre. only had a hour in the place but could have spent days in there. on the main floors there is massive wooden crates full of machinery from when it closed down and dials and pipes everywhere. tried desperatly to get to the roof but all access seemed to being choped out. like i said i only got a hour before el seccyio turned up 4 guys on foot and a roaming car, these guys got a bit to close for comfort so i split, didnt fancey the rest of the hols in a spanish port cell.
i think the place shut around the late 80's but below is what little history i can find, in english anyway-
This coal-fired power station is one of the most important examples of industrial architecture for this area. Inaugurated by general Franco in 1957 and built according to a design by the Spanish architect Molezun. It was not located by the sea because of the views, but because the coal shipments arrived by sea. This site has an area of 53000 m2.
as far as i can tell the coal was loaded on the giant external conveyor belt, taken up the the 5 massive silos which them droped the coal into the furnices underground which them powered the turbines.......i think
so heres a few pics hope you like and if u going to alcudia the place is a must its just awsome inside.
cheers gang
