RAF Treleaver R6 Semi sunken rotor bunker.

After WW2 a chain of R6 Rotor bunkers were built in response to the nuclear threat from the Soviet Union. They were intended too function as early warning radar stations and regional seats of governments in the event of nuclear war.

I saw a program the early part of this year about telecommunications in Cornwall and the bunker at Treleaver was mentioned... I’d visited a lot of R.O.C in the past and was quite interested in finding this relic of the Cold War.

The building wasn’t really that hard too find ... The building had been more or less empty for fifty odd years but it 2007 part of the bunker was converted into a brewery, which had a website ,which also had an address and postcode..but also a warning about the dangers too uninvited guests.

The Explore...

So on a sunny Sunday in July with postcode entered into the sat off we set,the sat nav took us right there .

As we pull up next too the original large rusty gates open and hanging from their hinges I figured the brewery must be closed on a Sunday and drove straight in and around the bunker into the car park only to be faced with a static caravan with a van parked outside , so I thought I might as well ask permission too have a mooch.

I knocked on the door of the caravan and heard a woman’s angry voice inside saying “F**king hell who the F**ks that “.

I thought too myself this doesn’t look promising,The window of the caravan swung up and the Jeremy Kyle contender said “WHAT” ... “I wonder if I could have a look at the old bunker “ I said ... “ Knock yourself out “she replied... so off I mooched.

The bunker is split into 3 levels, the top level was converted into the brewery and wasn’t accessible, but a farmer had knocked two bloody great holes in the side of the bunker one to access ground level and tipped tons of scalpings in the bunker too make a slope too access the underground level.

So off I set down the slope to the lower level, apart from old farm machinery at first glance it looked like the whole bunker had been stripped to the bones.

It wasn’t till I climbed up into a door at the back of the bunker that I realised the farmer had only been using half the bunker for storage, the other half consisted of the old generator rooms .. rooms for air conditioning... air conditioner still in place and many other rooms all stripped but still interesting... I thought too myself I need too find another one of these in better nick which I did find and visited the following weekend.... report and pics too follow ...
