Report - RAF WYMESWOLD, Tower -23/06/2007

I made my visit this morning early (04.00) the airfield is now being used for motor sport, I was not quite sure as to the reception I'd get so decided to go at the crack of dawn.

The rain had stopped when I arrived and the morning was cool and misty. I checked out my point of access and found somewhere to park.
There was no one about so over the gate I went.

I walked around the peri track and up the one of the runways (I didn't want to trample the crops planted in every available space

I got within a couple of hundred yards of the tower and found the only way to it without going to the end of the runway, and back along the peri was to cut across the crops . I followed the tractor tracks where possible but found it very wet and muddy . anyhow I got there it was still quiet and no sign of life.

The tower is totally abandoned and derelict . The original tower seems at one time to have been extended (the part with the large windows, above) this latter part is in the worst condition ,with collapsed floors.

To find access to the tower was awkward as it is very overgrown the first entrance I tried only lead to a small room with an original light fitting and broken bulb

Around the back I found the way in . Can you spot it in the photo below ?

Thats right ! the tree is growing out of it

Inside is not as bad as I'd expected .
It's seems sound and solid the stairs and floors are concrete and solid (apart from the front extension) .
There is not much graffiti only a bit here and there, which makes me think security must be reasonable ?
There is still electrical wiring (disconnected) with fuse boxes wire and conduit,
though switches sockets and light fittings have mostly gone.
There is original paint (flaking) and in a side room a complete porcelain urinal and brackets for the cistern .
The building has 3 floors with a central concrete staircase , on the first two floors are several rooms off a central corridor.
I nearly shit myself in one corridor when 3 bats swooped at me
I think thats something I'll have to get used to exploring these places
The third floor is only the small box on top and the roof which looks like originally had steel handrails around the edge .

I bet this has seen a few cocks in its time

I think this may be part of the handrail from the roof

There were other sheds nearby I had a look round. Behind this shed the factory had started work and a forklift was running about freaking me out a bit :

Inside this one was what looks to be a sweeping machine ?

This one had a broken portaloo in it

Hope thats rust on the wall

The roof was shit as well

This building south of the Tower

The water tower looks cool I bet some of you would like to climb it
But its not my cup of tea :crazy

This one to the north has a blast wall

My boots were muddy, my jeans were soaked, but all in all a good visit i'm glad I did it before it gets demolished or converted
This tower seems odd ? thinking about it I guess it feels empty (no soul)
there are no ghosts here stalking your visit (only bats )
